The result of the move request was: Move to Mason Durie (psychiatrist) and Mason Durie (community leader). Jafeluv (talk) 07:32, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

– Mason Durie's grandfather, John Mason Durie, was also known as Mason Durie (according to his DNZB entry). The purpose of this discussion is to find the most appropriate disambiguators. Schwede66 22:10, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be inclined to use dates of birth and death: Mason Durie (1889–1971) and Mason Durie (1938–). Note that Durie and Mason Durie disambiguation pages should also be created. I take full responsibility for naming of John Mason Durie, as I created it. Stuartyeates (talk) 06:38, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, that is not how to disambiguate people. I quote the relevant passages from the naming conventions: "The disambiguator is usually a noun indicating what the person is noted for being. ... Years of birth and death are not normally used as disambiguators (readers are more likely to be seeking this information than to already know it) although this may be necessary when there are multiple people with the same name and tag". A New Zealand example for such a case is George Hunter (politician, born 1859) and George Hunter (politician, born 1821), but the third one, George Hunter (mayor), has a different dab altogether and thus doesn't need the birth year.
